X<sup>e<\/sup>SS renders a game at a lower resolution then upscales the image using AI to a higher resolution with quality similar (or better) to a native render. This speedup occurs because games run faster rendered at lower resolutions as the GPU has fewer pixels to push. But low resolutions are a bummer, and we want the best of both worlds. So how does it all come together?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graphics experts within Intel have been researching different approaches over the past few years and it became clear that infusing AI in the upscaling, or super sampling process, was the way to go to build a high performance, high quality solution. With X<sup>e<\/sup>SS, a trained model is applied to low-resolution frames and takes input from motion vectors and a frame history to send high resolution images to the display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/game.intel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/xess-rendering-pipeline.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20165\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/game.intel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/xess-rendering-pipeline.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Got all that? If you\u2019d rather skip math class today, take a look at the frametime chart below. TAP\u2019s blackboard shows rendering each frame at a lower resolution and replacing temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) with X<sup>e<\/sup>SS saves a considerable amount of time. Lower frametimes = higher framerates and smoother gameplay. Simple!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/game.intel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/xess-4k-vs-traditional-4k.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20166\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/game.intel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/xess-4k-vs-traditional-4k.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But enough work \u2014 it\u2019s time to play! We\u2019ve been collaborating with some fantastic developers who\u2019ve gone through this process to implement X<sup>e<\/sup>SS in their games. We tried not to die in a developer build of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a cinematic gaming experience with X<sup>e<\/sup>SS built-in. Devs and publisher Eidos-Montr\u00e9al and Square Enix are going the extra mile to give gamers the latest visual tech four years after the game\u2019s launch and the benefits are evident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To suit your preference for performance versus precision, X<sup>e<\/sup>SS is available at several different quality levels which vary the input resolution. \u201cPerformance\u201d runs the fastest, \u201cUltra Quality\u201d gives the best images, while \u201cBalanced\u201d and \u201cQuality\u201d fall in-between. TAP set X<sup>e<\/sup>SS to Balanced in&nbsp;<em>Shadow of the Tomb Raider<\/em>&nbsp;while my X<sup>e<\/sup>SS was turned off. We both ran at 1440p, max settings with raytracing on, and his game ran around high-60 frames per second while mine was in the mid-40s. For more info on framerates, see the data table at the end of this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is thwarting&nbsp;<em>Tomb Raider<\/em>\u2019s Mayan apocalypse not your preferred adventure? Over a dozen other devs are jumping aboard the X<sup>e<\/sup>SS train, including the folks behind&nbsp;<em>NARAKA: BLADEPOINT<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Arcadegeddon<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Redout II.&nbsp;<\/em>We\u2019ve also been working with Activision-Blizzard to include X<sup>e<\/sup>SS in the new&nbsp;<em>Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II<\/em>&nbsp;at its launch! We\u2019re also working with UL, publishers of the 3DMark benchmark tool as well to create an X<sup>e<\/sup>SS feature test, which can be tested on <em>any<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 not just Intel Arc \u2014 GPUs which support HLSL Shader Model 6.
