Merv Lee Kwai, Regional Franchise Leader for Amazon Games, dropped by Intel Gaming Access to talk magic and MMOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a lifelong MMO player,\u201d Lee Kwai happily admits. \u201cProfessional, and enthusiast. My role is to ensure that players around the world get their hands on the best possible version of <em>THRONE AND LIBERTY \u2026<\/em> Over the last decades, NCSOFT have created and published timeless franchises like <em>Lineage<\/em>, <em>Blade &amp; Soul<\/em>et <em>Guild Wars<\/em>. <em>THRONE AND LIBERTY<\/em> is a continuation of that legacy, and aims to build upon the success of these previous titles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, who is <em>THRONE AND LIBERTY<\/em> for? \u201cThe game is for players who enjoy exploring vast fantasy worlds with their friends,\u201d says Lee Kwai, \u201cand for those who like meeting challenges head-on. Solisium is an immersive game world filled with dangerous PvE dungeons and open-world capture points claimed through PvP battles \u2026 All players will follow the game\u2019s main story arc as it leads them to explore the beautiful game world. Players will delve deep through open-world dungeons\u2014some are six layers deep and can support over 1000 players simultaneously. We have massive-scale world bosses, with versions of those bosses as guild challenges, and we\u2019re constantly adding more content!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdiY3luq56En6dbgHlHm4-hUD7yso05ZqraLxwcbSnIsucSPM5UvTXxLc3XsDb7XMc1kb_p9xEr1LZdiMp_0xmaQaHnwyakh64cX0TQYz18fVTlLMNoJQwuagMNWrF3EaFF_eYbQPW7p3y3ChI8K7OyKy74F3K8EHXskvru1w?key=tIv0wgMMSzcoY2SUBI0Bag\" alt=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Express Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a vast world, how does the game keep things personal? \u201cThe player character is highly customizable,\u201d Lee Kwai explains, \u201cdown to the smallest details, allowing for freedom of expression and a wide range of cosmetic choices including the ability to morph into different creatures. This is the game\u2019s version of mounts and gives players options to express their individuality while getting around the world in style. We\u2019ve spent a lot of effort increasing the depth of the game\u2019s combat options \u2026 they feature a class-agnostic, dual-weapon system in which players can choose to wield two of seven weapon types simultaneously. On top of that, players have three to five options on how to customize every single ability granted by a weapon type. As a player, the thing I\u2019m looking forward to the most is the ability to explore the game end-to-end with my close friends and the guild we create. Up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Making the Dream Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we\u2019re on the team, any tips on collaboration from the Amazon\/NCSOFT partnership? \u201cFrom the onset, we prioritized a \u2018One Team\u2019 approach. We collaborate closely, transcending the traditional division of developer and publisher, which allows us to be in lockstep as we listen to our players and evolve the game over time.\u201d And one of the best parts of this? \u201cOur Castle Sieges are a hallmark feature and to make them work at the scale intended, many hurdles must be overcome,\u201d Lee Kwai recalls. \u201cThe tech needs to stand up to the vision first and foremost, the in-game menus must be comprehensive enough to summarize happenings and convey status, and players need to maintain character control while having the expected amount of agency \u2026 In order to test the feature, we need to replicate the scale of battle with real people. One of my fondest memories during the game\u2019s development was participating in my first siege at NCSOFT headquarters. The whole team showed up to do battle!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdl2eVFximIjP0q77kXh4uqQ_aVk_kZx-lnoF-wnnmcpLghm6RNKfIrypJp-xpnClAG_jGXSlN0FK0KWbBNfNLIvl_BhOubF1a6c2v9YHFmPLGh3JS-Q6d-mDSq1U7M1wOsvWam-J3IfhQ93VVlSCz6DE0dDzZkYHavB-MFqU9ISjKuVOUVJTI?key=tIv0wgMMSzcoY2SUBI0Bag\" alt=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Performance for PC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At such a scale, you need performance to match. \u201cOn the hardware side, you can imagine how cool it is to have a burly machine rendering thousands of characters brawling it out together, with magic and golems and feelings,\u201d Lee Kwai says. \u201cWe won\u2019t reveal our secret sauce on how we make all that work but there are a bunch of in-game settings that players can use to customize the right experience for them. Of course, all of it looks and feels even better running on high-performance PC hardware. Intel\u00ae X<sup>e<\/sup> Super Sampling (X<sup>e<\/sup>SS) was immediately appealing as we\u2019re always trying to raise the bar for in-game graphics. Intel provides an X<sup>e<\/sup>SS plugin for games made with Unreal Engine and the documentation was rock solid and easily accessed.
