Even the undead like to party. First-person post-apocalyptic zombie smasher Dying Light turned 10 on January 27th, and to mark the occasion developer Techland has unleashed an infected horde of treats for fans. With a few well-placed discounts, they’ve also made it more attractive than ever for newcomers to parkour their way across the open world cityscape , creatively dismembering zombies along the way.
Since late January, there’s been a program of in-game events running in both Dying Light and its freshly 3-year-old sequel Dying Light 2: Stay Human. For Dying Light, there’s a ton of cool alterations to play with for a limited time, including Low Gravity, Super Crane, and Viral Rush, alongside a freshly replenished armory packed with delights such as the Deadeye Crossbow, Chicken Stick, Rusty Spine shotgun and more.
Meanwhile, Dying Light 2: Stay Human is serving up three weeks of in-game goodies, with bounties, rewards, and some cool weapons to take for a spin, plus cosmetic billboards, graffiti, and skins to brighten up the zombie-strewn hellscape.
And all of that’s before we mention the discounts. Dying Light is available for a massive 70% off on Steam, while Dying Light 2: Stay Human Reloaded Edition comes with a 67% discount, including the base game plus the Bloody Ties DLC. There’s also a raft of bundle choices to fit every budget and player profile, so there are fewer reasons than ever to deprive yourself of one of gaming’s greatest bloodbaths.
Dying Light has been a hell of a journey for the team at Techland. “I don’t think we realized what we were creating,” said franchise director Tymon Smektała in their recent 10th anniversary video. “Dying Light revolutionized the open world survival horror genre with the combination of first-person parkour, melee combat, day and night experiences, and a lot of scares. We were a small team back then, but we put our heart and soul into the game.” Whatever they did, it worked.
The team showcased some wild statistics for the anniversary. Collectively, Dying Light players have:
- played for a total of 1,178,442,139 hours, equivalent of 1 person playing since the ice age
- killed 75 billion zombies, or 9 times the world population
- run 12 billion kilometers, the same as 41 trips to the sun and back
- cut off 20 billion heads, which would apparently fill 36,870 olympic swimming pools
- severed 30 billion limbs, equal to the weight of 2.1 million Statues of Liberty
- and died 3 billion times
If that’s not worth celebrating, I don’t know what is.
The final blood-red cherry on the zombie cake is Dying Light: The Beast. Coming in summer 2025, the all-new standalone adventure sees Dying Light’s original hero Kyle Crane enjoying a break in the countryside, following his escape from years of unpleasant experiments. You know he’s going to be squashing skulls.
