Intel Gaming Access caught up with Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, who shed some light on the development process, the game&#8217;s innovative mechanics, and what players can expect from this ambitious project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Larian Studios, an independent studio founded in Ghent, Belgium, is renowned for crafting complex role-playing games (RPGs), including the acclaimed Divinity series. Their latest offering, Baldur\u2019s Gate 3, builds upon this legacy, promising an expansive RPG that gives players immense agency within a meticulously handcrafted world. The game&#8217;s central theme is identity, expressed through complex choices, branching narratives, and a character creator that supports eleven fantasy races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sheer level of freedom is perhaps the most distinctive feature of Baldur\u2019s Gate 3. The game provides players with the liberty to explore and experiment in a sprawling universe that rivals even the biggest sandbox games. All this is brought to life through stunning cinematics and dialogue, and the entire experience is available in multiplayer, even in split-screen mode on PlayStation 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The spirit of the game stems from the classic Computer RPG (CRPG) design philosophy: player choice. \u201cThese games resist the urge to say \u2018no\u2019 to players,\u201d says Douse, \u201cinstead encouraging creativity and problem-solving. Larian Studios infused AAA production values into this framework, enhancing the branching narratives and the depth of possibilities for a thoroughly modern gaming experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/dev-intel-gap.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-53-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-944\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3, despite being in Early Access, is already teeming with content. Players can expect more than a hundred hours of gameplay, with Act 1 less than a third of the entire game. \u201cNo single person at Larian Studios can detail every facet of the game,\u201d says Douse, \u201c \u2013 a testament to its vast and intricate world.\u201d During the Early Access stage, player telemetry provided crucial insights for refining the game. The team identified problematic areas in the map, analyzed what worked in combat, and used community feedback to shape their communication strategy. It was a rigorous process of continuous learning and improvement, and Douse credits the community for being instrumental in this development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the significant challenges the team faced was implementing split-screen co-op,\u201d says Douse, \u201ca feature that introduced a series of technical complications. Overcoming these issues took extensive lateral thinking, trial and error, and performance optimization.\u201d The PC performance of Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3 is another stand-out feature. The studio strives to ensure the game is accessible on a range of devices, with teams working full-time on performance optimization to balance visual ambition and system requirements.
