The deckbuilding tabletop game Magic: The Gathering has been going strong for 28 years, with millions of players spanning the globe. Magic: Legends is the most recent videogame spin-off from the original series, with fans eager to see how this title brings a new chapter to the expansive multiverse.

Where does Magic: Legends fit into Magic Multiverse? What is it about?
While Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios (Magic: Legends&#39; publisher and developer teams respectively) have kept a lot of information under lock and key, it has been confirmed that the game takes place after the Great Mending of Dominaria and before the Hour of Devastation on Amonkhet. Players will get to visit well-known planes (the in-game equivalent of worlds) such as Dominaria and Zendikar, and notable heroes and villains from canon will make appearances.
Players will take on the role of a Planeswalker, powerful individuals with a Spark that allows them to travel between different planes within the Multiverse. The classes and deckbuilding component of the videogame were a work of long-term collaboration between Wizards of the Coast (Magic: The Gathering&#39;s publisher) and Cryptic Studios, so that key story components could align with larger lore.
What are the core mechanics of _ Magic: Legends _ ? What differentiates it from Magic: The Gathering?
Deckbuilding is the most important mechanic of Magic: Legends, but players will have to strategize with other portions of their Loadouts. A character&#39;s Loadout is comprised of their Class, Spell Deck(s), Equipment, and Artifacts. Additionally, spells require mana which regenerates through combat, and each Class has a unique ability kit that ties to a corresponding mana color theme. For example, red mana indicates a burn effect leaning into more direct damage. The variation in Loadouts allows flexibility and diversity for players. Players can diversify their Loadouts so that two identical classes could have very differently-executed playstyles. Building your Spell and Artifact Loadouts will be integral to success, especially for players interested in the 3-player co-op feature, as complimenting your teammates spells is an important strategy. Magic: Legends is an RPG, so players have an active role in determining their fate. It&#39;s also important to note that Magic: Legends is transitioning into Open Beta on PC, so mechanics will be tweaked and expanded as the game continues to grow. The development team is already working to expand the number of Classes players can use.

Part of what makes Magic: Legends so unique is its heritage and namesake, Magic: The Gathering. Decades of established worldbuilding and story gives Magic: Legends a wealth of history to utilize. This makes the storytelling component of this RPG particularly well-developed.
Magic: The Gathering is approachable to players unfamiliar with the game, as well as longtime fans. With PvP duels and three-player multiplayer co-op options available, players can put their deckbuilding skills to the test in multiple ways. Magic: Legends touts non-linear story progression, meaning players can choose which Planes-story they wish to work on instead of being driven to a more constrained storyline. Akin to the tabletop version, players are dependent on the order of their decks to determine their move sets. Decks are 12 cards at a time, and spells are determined by drawing 4 random cards, with a new one cycling in after each use.

Magic: Legends has adapted the deliberate pace of Magic: The Gathering to accommodate the fast-paced action of videogames. Magic: Legends moves away from some of the more technical aspects of the tabletop version, such as having to declare attacking creatures or managing summoned creature allies. This allows the digital game to run faster, creating a &quot;persistent online action RPG&quot;. The result is a complex hack-and-cast RPG that mechanically and narratively adapts to player needs.
