A new kind of soccer game is on its way, one set to tear up the genre’s script. The Beta for new soccer smash GOALS has exceeded all developer expectations, and is extended through March 30. The Version 1.0 release is scheduled for later in spring, so things are about to get very busy for the team at GOALS. (In case you think we’re confused, GOALS is also the name of the Stockholm-based studio behind the game.) Intel Gaming Access invited the team for a sit down before the whistle blows for kick-off.
No Excuses, Just Football
GOALS is a remote-first studio that draws on talent across Europe and brings a distinct philosophy to the virtual soccer pitch. “At our core, we imagine football as a universal digital sport,” the team says. “A place where every player can express themselves. The future we’re building is one where player input matters more than luck, and where competition is shaped by skill, not systems.”
“No excuses, just football” is the game’s tagline, giving an idea of just what players can expect. “Most football games tilt the field,” the studio says, “relying on systemic advantages, automation, or chasing licensed spectacle. GOALS breaks that cycle. We’re building the most player-centric football game ever made—designed with players, not just for them. Our focus is simple: Mastery decides outcomes. No scripting, no hidden systems, no artificial balancing—just authentic, competitive football where every action is intentional and every result is earned.”

In a genre dominated by real-life soccer stars and their playing styles, GOALS is set to bring back the unpredictable. “GOALS is for players who love football and want a game where their skill truly matters,” the studio affirms. “It’s for those who feel held back by genre restrictions—whether you’re a casual player, or someone who wants to push themselves and compete at a higher level.” The studio takes what makes the live sport essential to millions and translates it to their game: “We’ve created a space where players can compete on fair terms, be part of a growing global community, and take part in structured competition and esports.”
Premier League Performance
Stay with us for news about the studio’s exciting esports ambitions, but first: more about the game itself. To craft their particular vision of what a soccer title should be and how it should feel and respond, the team had to build from the turf up. They did so with one idea: “If you win, it’s because you earned it”.
“GOALS is built on our proprietary engine, SENTEC, which delivers no input delay, bespoke netcode, and ultra-responsive gameplay,” the team explains. “SENTEC features a Movement Cache system that replaces traditional pathfinding. This allows for deterministic, high-performance movement even in complex scenarios. Smarter AI enhances control without ever taking it away from the player, while cross-continental matchmaking ensures global competition without compromise. At launch, players can look forward to Knockout Mode, Ranked Leaderboards, and deep customization across kits, stadiums, and celebrations.”

At the same time that GOALS designed their own engine—shifting from traditional OOP in Unreal to Data-Oriented Design (DOD)—they decided to make sure the game could run on almost anything. “This required deep optimization across shaders, systems, and rendering,” the team affirms. “We also run a unique split PC setup on Steam, where a headless launcher detects your hardware and automatically delivers the optimal version of the game—ensuring a seamless experience from entry-level laptops to high-end rigs.”
The aim was not just to make everything look good and respond well; GOALS cites performance as the “foundation of competitive integrity”. This means you can trust the gameplay; you can compete knowing nothing external tilts the outcome; and you can play whenever and wherever you want. There is always a benchmark for performance, however. “The best experience,” GOALS says, “comes from high frame-rates, low latency, and smooth responsiveness—ideally on a high-refresh-rate monitor with Intel® Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) enabled. Intel XeSS was the first upscaler we implemented, thanks to its ease of integration and strong support from Intel’s DevRel team. We now have XeSS 2 fully integrated, with frame generation, and we’re upgrading to XeSS 3. This partnership has helped us push performance across both high-end and entry-level systems—staying true to our vision of no barriers to play.”

Match Days
GOALS launches later this spring, but also keep an eye out for open qualifications for the GOALS global esports competition, which are set to begin in May. Regional finals are scheduled for June, with grand finals in early July. The GOALS studio is also set to drop FIFA World Cup-related content in June, when the in-game experience connects to the real-world global tournament. Start lacing those football boots…
