Hit the Bricks—LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight

by Intel Gaming |

Buckle up, Batman and LEGO® fans, it’s what you’ve been waiting for: the Caped Crusader returns May 22 with the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Not only that, the game is part of Intel’s Spring Bundle, which means it’s free with qualifying purchases. In advance of the launch, we’d like to tell you all about the DC delights to come.

The new game fits together flawlessly with the storied history of Batman movies, television shows, and, of course, video games. TT Games is back on developer duty and, in the must-see “Building the Legacy” behind-the-scenes mini-doc, TT Games’ Strategic Director and Head of Development Team, Jonathan Smith, affirmed that with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, the team was able to “draw upon the whole history of that wonderful character and distil decades of fantastic storytelling to really immerse players in the experience of becoming the Dark Knight.”

Let’s unbox this for you. Your experience begins at Wayne Manor, where young Bruce Wayne lives an idyllic life with his parents… well, we know how that turns out so let’s skip ahead, past the well-full-of-bats formative experience, and on to training with The League of Shadows. Bruce returns to Gotham City, alongside the greatest crime-fighting allies, ready to face off against a Rogues’ Gallery of infamous DC Super-Villains. And yes, the city itself looks amazing: awesomely cinematic at a distance, full of wit, craft, and charm up-close as the brick-by-brick brilliance of the environment unfolds.

Gotham City is a stunning open world full of secrets and surprises to discover, puzzles to solve, challenges to complete, rewards to collect, and crimes to stop. As you progress, you pick up the skills you need to turn back the rising tide of crime and have a ridiculous amount of fun while doing so. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight also introduces a dynamic new combat system that delivers an authentic expression of Batman’s fighting style with fluid attack chains, over-the-top takedowns, and awesome gadgets. You can play solo or team up with a friend through two-player local couch co-op mode.

This brings us to characters—all giants of the DC universe no matter their size. Batman is playable, of course, and so is Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Who do you face off against? That Rogues’ Gallery we mentioned includes (but isn’t limited to) The Joker, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, and Bane (who gets a hilarious steps-on-LEGO brick moment in the trailer, because even DC Super-Villains can feel that stuff through their socks). Each playable character has unique skills, plus signature gadgets, all on show as they explore, uncover crimes, and complete challenges in their own way. Do we start with Batman’s Batarang, Jim Gordon’s Foam Sprayer, Catwoman’s whip…? So many cool choices.

Speaking of choices, there are 100 different suits and outfits to earn throughout the story campaign, which includes an array of Batsuits and outfits for every playable character, all closely inspired by Batman’s legacy in media. Eligible players can also unlock the Golden Age Batsuit inspired by Detective Comics #27 published in 1939. First, you need to sign up for a WB Games account here. (Eligible players with existing accounts need to log to their WB Games account at launch to redeem the item.) It’s a gorgeous piece of history, and the ears of the cowl alone bring a lot of joy to an already joyful game.

Now you’re looking sharp, what do you tool around town in to complete the vibe? Well, there are a few options there, too. Over 20 vehicles, in fact. Cruise the landmarks of Gotham City in a range of Batmobiles and Batcycles, including the legendary Tumbler from the Dark Knight Trilogy. The levels of immersion are by now off the charts; as Jonathan Smith says: “You’re in a world of Gotham City that is more alive and rich than any environment we’ve ever created.”

There is so much more to discover (do we have time to mention the over 250 Batcave props and trophies you can get access to in order to customize the Batcave and celebrate achievements…?), so start your countdown to launch now. You don’t want to miss this glorious celebration of all things Batman. It’s time to put on the cape and cowl, gamers.
